Toyota bolts a second immobilizer onto LandCruisers as Australian thefts soar

Toyota Australia is selling a fob-gated secondary immobilizer for LandCruiser and Prado owners while pushing for a ban on theft-facilitation devices.

Toyota’s newest anti-theft retrofit for Australia only lets the engine start when two things are present: the car’s own key and a dedicated security fob shipped with the kit, spare included. Without that fob nearby, the immobilizer keeps the engine silent even when the factory key is in the ignition.

Dealers are now fitting the bolt-on to the LandCruiser 300 Series and the LandCruiser Prado 250 Series, and the timing tracks a wider problem: thefts of the RAV4, HiLux and other popular models have been climbing across the country. A light on the steering column and a sticker on the body tell would-be thieves the car is protected.

Roughly five hours of workshop time and about A$1,735 fitted buy the hardware. Toyota’s cover stretches to whichever period ends later, the remaining new-car warranty or two years from installation.

Toyota says the add-on is meant for current owners rather than new showroom stock. Since 2025 the company has been upgrading security on the two LandCruiser lines and the HiLux, with the all-new RAV4 next in line, and executives told CarExpert that no theft of the updated range using sophisticated devices had come to its attention in Australia as of publication.

Toyota also wants the tools themselves gone. It keeps pressing for a ban on devices used to facilitate vehicle theft and for rules covering the legitimate hardware that locksmiths, mechanics and other automotive professionals rely on, arguing that a national theft wave demands more than per-car fixes.
