Silicon Motion clears vehicle cyber audit as R155 pressure builds

Silicon Motion earned ISO/SAE 21434 process certification from SGS-TUV Saar, a milestone that supports UNECE R155 cyber security management system requirements for vehicle type approval.

A process audit has now cleared the automotive storage arm of Silicon Motion against ISO/SAE 21434:2021, a milestone automakers increasingly treat as a prerequisite for supplier qualification.

The certification, issued by SGS-TUV Saar, covers the flash controller vendor’s cybersecurity engineering and management processes rather than any single product. It confirms the company can identify, assess and manage cyber risk across the automotive product lifecycle, from design through production and post-sale support.

The standard matters because it underpins UNECE Regulation No. 155, the rule that forces vehicle type approval applicants to run a certified cyber security management system. Suppliers whose processes fall outside that framework can slow an automaker’s compliance path, so certification has shifted from differentiator to baseline.

“Cybersecurity is fundamental to the development of next-generation connected and software-defined vehicles,” said Nelson Duann, senior vice president of Silicon Motion’s edge and automotive storage business, casting the audit as customer-facing assurance rather than a marketing milestone.

The timing is deliberate. Europe’s Cyber Resilience Act started enforcing 24-hour vulnerability reporting obligations on September 11, and storage controllers now carry firmware that gets patched over the air. A supplier that can document how it handles vulnerabilities has an easier conversation with everyone downstream.

Silicon Motion says it will keep expanding the program as harmonized standards and implementing guidance firm up ahead of the regulation’s full application.
