Tata Electronics, a major supplier to both Apple and Tesla, has confirmed a cybersecurity breach after the World Leaks ransomware group dumped approximately 200,000 files allegedly stolen from the company’s systems, including proprietary schematics and employee passport data.

The breach is significant for the automotive sector because Tata Electronics manufactures critical components for electric vehicles, including parts used in Tesla’s supply chain. The exposed data could enable cybercriminals to identify security vulnerabilities in Tesla’s component designs, while competitors and counterfeiters could potentially reverse-engineer proprietary technology.

The World Leaks ransomware group claimed responsibility and published samples of the stolen data on their leak site. The files reportedly include detailed component schematics, manufacturing specifications, and employee personally identifiable information including passport copies. Tata Electronics stated it is investigating the scope of the breach and working with law enforcement.

Security analysts note that supply chain attacks in the automotive sector have become an increasingly prominent threat vector. Unlike direct attacks on automakers, breaches at tier-two suppliers like Tata Electronics can go undetected for longer periods while exposing design intellectual property for multiple manufacturers simultaneously.

The incident follows a pattern of increasing ransomware attacks targeting the automotive supply chain. VicOne’s Q2 2026 report found that logistics and transportation sectors accounted for 40 percent of ransomware activity, with manufacturing firms facing elevated risks due to the high operational costs of production downtime.

Tata has not disclosed whether the stolen design data could enable future attacks on vehicles using the compromised components. The company continues to assess the full extent of the damage while cooperating with authorities.
