LAPD backs a $235M Axon deal and streetlight plate cameras

Los Angeles police commissioners weighed a $235M Axon contract and a pilot that would mount plate-reading cameras on streetlights.

Los Angeles police commissioners weighed a quarter-billion-dollar package from Axon Enterprise on Tuesday. The proposal runs ten years, costs $235M, and puts plate-reading capability on more than 1,600 patrol car cameras alongside Tasers and cloud storage.

It appears to be the first renewal of plate reader hardware since the department’s inspector general urged it to suspend new deployments.

Above the streetlights, another layer is planned. Chief Jim McDonnell signed a memo allowing a free three-month trial of Axon’s Lightpost product, in which subcontractor Ubicquia attaches units to existing poles and powers them from the lamp itself. Marketing for the system promises recognition of vehicles, plates, pedestrians and other objects. Where the poles will stand is undecided.

The direction cuts against the national mood. Boston let its Flock agreement lapse after an audit counted 11,004 officer searches, roughly half logged without a case number. Texas halted new rights-of-way permits, Missouri limited retention to 30 days and Florida ordered readers off state highways.

The board’s watchdog had recommended pausing new cameras while vendors and data practices were reassessed, finding they help recover stolen cars but carry unresolved sharing risks. Approval would stretch the city’s reach from patrol cars to the poles above its streets, where one fixture watches every passing vehicle.
