VicOne research reveals ransomware threats targeting global logistics fleets

New research from VicOnes CyberThreat Research Lab has identified two critical vulnerability classes in fleet management applications and backend services, with direct implications for logistics operators managing connected vehicle fleets.

The research, detailed in a July 2026 report on ransomware threats to global logistics fleets, found that fleet management platforms are increasingly targeted through API authorization weaknesses and secrets management gaps. The analysis follows the 2023 KNP Logistics case, where a ransomware attack originating from a weak employee password eventually forced the 158-year-old company to close after attackers encrypted internal systems and cut off access to critical fleet data.

As fleet platforms become more connected, a single compromise can now reach beyond office IT to threaten the digital infrastructure that coordinates cargo routes and vehicles. VicOne recommends that fleet operators deploy phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication, strengthen API authorization policies, implement automated secrets detection in CI pipelines, and maintain broader visibility across fleet management platforms to detect anomalies in the early stages of an attack.
