Infineon Opens €5 Billion Smart Power Fab in Dresden, Boosting Chip Supply for Software Defined Vehicles

New Fab Targets Software Defined Vehicle Chips

Infineon Technologies has opened its €5 billion (US$5.8 billion) Smart Power Fab in Dresden, Germany, ahead of its original schedule. The facility doubles the company’s manufacturing capacity at that site and is described as the world’s largest factory for power semiconductors and analog/mixed-signal technologies. It will produce chips critical for software defined vehicles, AI data center power supplies, and renewable energy systems. The fab creates 1,000 direct local jobs and allows capacity ramp up at double the previous speed, giving Infineon greater flexibility to respond to market demands.

By opening ahead of plan, Infineon signals strong execution capability in large semiconductor construction projects. This capacity advantage arrives at a time when demand for AI infrastructure and advanced vehicle electronics is accelerating. The same power semiconductors that enable software defined vehicles also support AI data center power supplies and renewable energy conversion, reducing exposure to any single end market. The fab is integrated with Infineon’s Villach, Austria plant as a “One Virtual Fab” network for faster product qualification. European semiconductor sovereignty is advancing from policy to concrete infrastructure, with Dresden’s Silicon Saxony cluster now hosting this major facility, reducing European reliance on Asian supply chains for critical chips that underpin multiple industrial transitions.
