Autonomous Fleet Deployment in Zurich

WeRide and Uber are planning to introduce commercial robotaxi services in the Greater Zurich Region, marking their second European joint deployment following a recent announcement about Madrid. The operations are subject to regulatory approval from Switzerland’s Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) and are expected to begin later this year through the Uber app. Local operator Rydera will manage day-to-day fleet operations.

Regulatory and Technical Framework

WeRide already holds a FEDRO driverless permit for Zurich’s Furttal region. The planned fleet will scale progressively toward fully driverless operations in coordination with FEDRO. The service will run on WeRide’s One and Genesis platforms, building on deployments across the Middle East since December 2024, including driverless services in Abu Dhabi and Dubai as well as public rides in Riyadh.

Strategic Implications for Connected Vehicles

This deployment highlights the growing intersection of ride-hailing platforms and autonomous vehicle technology. For automotive security engineers and OEM security teams, the integration of third party autonomous systems with existing fleet management and over the air update infrastructure introduces new attack surfaces. The use of Uber’s app as a dispatch layer means connected vehicle systems must handle secure API communication between the robotaxi’s onboard ECUs and cloud based dispatch servers. As fleets expand under evolving regulatory frameworks, maintaining CAN bus integrity and secure OTA update channels becomes critical for preventing remote exploits in production autonomous vehicles.
